Every year we have a few fighting games to try and play, some better than others. Right now we're moving into the latest generation of video game consoles, but that doesn't mean there aren't a ton of great games you can probably pick up and experience for the first time for something like the Xbox. One. In this list, we look back at some of our favorite fighting video games that have come out in the market for the Xbox One console platform.
#15 Jump Strength
From the Spike Chunsoft development team you may know from Zero Escape and the Danganronpa series comes Jump Force. This is a fighting game that features a ton of different franchises where you'll get featured characters from Black Clover, My Hero Academia, Bleach, Naruto, Dragon Ball, Yu-Gi-Oh, Yu Yu Hakusho, Hunter x Hunter, Fist of the North Star, One Piece, the list goes on and on. This premise will be based on a single evil enemy that has blurred the lines between these franchise worlds by throwing the mix.
However, the game's narrative itself isn't the most gripping story we've ever come across. It more or less takes a back seat to the fight, which is the point of the game anyway. This is a 1v1 fighting game where players take on a team of three fighters as they confront. It's not the best fighting game out there, the reception has been a bit mixed, but the developers have backed this game up with DLC character packs. If you like these different anime and manga characters, this is an easy buy due to all the different crossovers, but that's really where the focus is here.
#14 Killer Instinct
Killer Instinct is a classic game. I remember playing this title on the Nintendo Game Boy and years later we rebooted. Killer Instinct was released in 2022 from developers Double Helix Games. This is also a launch title for the Xbox One and interestingly, it was released as a free-to-play title. So, players who bought their new Xbox One console had access to this game for free. Now, like all free-to-play games, in-game purchases were required to fully enjoy the gaming experience. This title opted for seasonal releases, so we had three seasons that added in-game content.
If you're familiar with the IP, the same basic elements were brought out for this plot from previous installments, like a big tournament that the fighters were going through. It's also a game that has a pretty nice lineup of characters including newbies who can join a match and deliver combos or break combos against an opponent. Unfortunately, this IP didn't continue with a new episode, but fans are still going online to play this game today.
#13 Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite
Marvel vs. Capcom has been a crossover fighting franchise for several years now. We've seen new installments come out over the years since 1996, the last being Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite in 2022. It's a title that came out around the time we were gearing up for the next big Avengers movie, Avengers : Infinity War. As a result, this game had a play on Infinity Stones that would give players a bit of a temporary buff during fights. Likewise, the developers at Capcom wanted to make this game a little more accessible to newcomers to the franchise by reworking the mechanics of previous versions a bit.
It's also a 2v2 game that ditched the range of trios players would have had when fighting. However, the game offers players the ability to score quickly to string together a series of combo moves against their opponent. As the name suggests, this title features characters from Marvel and Capcom franchises where the storyline involves the two worlds colliding. Now the group of heroes are forced to work together to stop the evil Ultron Sigma. Unfortunately for a lot of players the story seemed to be the weak point but being a fighting game the focus should be on the battles which again since it's a reworked mechanical system to win newcomers, it is easy to trigger combos.
# 12 WWE 2K19
WWE games are always a hot seller and although WWE 2K19 is not the last installment, it would be recommended by fans. You kind of know what you get with a WWE video game is a lot of iconic wrestlers both new and old that players can fight with with different ring matches. With WWE 2K19, players are getting a new recovery system that gives players buff attributes during matches, which can help you achieve a victory. There is also a career mode here where you will take on the role of an amateur wrestler trying to make it into the WWE.
Likewise, this installment features the Showcase game mode which highlights a specific wrestler as you go through their most iconic matches. In this game, the featured wrestler is Daniel Bryan. That said, there are other WWE games available for the Xbox One that again feature some of the most different iconic wrestlers and show modes that detail their history.
#11 For Honor
Chances are you're familiar with For Honor and it's a different type of fighting game. This is an online hack-and-slash video game in which you will follow different factions of the era in a grand battle. In this game, it's about fighting as a group of knights, samurai or vikings. Matches are based on different types of battles, be it brawls or skirmishes. Upon entering the game, you will be able to choose equipment and participate in the battle. There's a good bit of strategy here as you'll need to work with your team, successfully block potentially fatal blows, and launch a series of attacks against enemy forces.
It's an exciting game that you can still find active today. Likewise, this game ends up going on sale from time to time, so if you want everything the title offers but aren't interested in the hefty price tag it comes with, then you might find a sale. which brings the game down drastically. Currently, at the time of writing this review, For Honor Complete Edition, which costs $100, is as low as $25. This will give you the base game, the various expansions as well as the latest annual pass which gives players access to new heroes and bonus content.
# 10 Skullgirls
Skullgirls was a title released on the Xbox 360, but you can grab it today through the Xbox One platform. It is a very popular 2D fighting game online and has received great reviews from different reviewers. In the game, players follow a narrative based on the Skullheart. This is an artifact that will grant a woman a wish when obtained every seven years. However, if the woman has an impure heart, she transforms into a monster known as Skullgirl. Years have passed and no woman who has taken control of the Skullheart has been deemed worthy of their wish.
Now, a group of women have joined forces to defeat the Skullgirls and claim the artifact for their various intentions. It's a team battle where groups of two or three characters will join you in the various fights. The battle mechanics will be familiar to you if you've played Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age Heroes as the developers based the battle team on this title for their inspiration in creating Skullgirls. Although this game is available for Xbox One via backward compatibility, there was an Enhanced Edition which was released in 2022 for the PlayStation 4 and PC with the Nintendo Switch receiving a port in 2022. This enhanced video game edition is Skullgirls 2nd Encore, but unfortunately it did not find its way to the Xbox One platform.
For years, Nintendo dominated the platform fighting genre with Super Smash Bros. IP. It's a popular video game series that gets a lot of buzz every time a new installment pops up, but that doesn't mean there isn't an alternative. Brawlhalla is one of the alternatives available right now that has gained quite a bit of success and it's set to play similar to Super Smash Bros. We have a great roster of characters to face and fight in a variety of different builds. platform levels.
During this time the game will roll out elements, again similar to Super Smash Bros, which can be a bit of a buff to your opponents. While Super Smash Bros has a long line of iconic video game characters to play, Brawlhalla also comes with some notable crossovers which include characters from Shovel Knight, Rayman, WWE, Adventure Time, Tomb Raider, and The Walking Dead, to name a few. quote that. just a little bit. Best of all, it's a free-to-play video game title, so you can experience it right now without having to spend a dime.
# 8 BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma Extend
The BlazBlue fighting franchise is beloved and features plenty of video games, but it's not an IP we see on the Xbox One platform. Luckily, we got BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma Extend for the Xbox One. It is another 2D fighting game made by Arc System Works which is known for offering several different fighting games in the market. Outside of BlazBlue, the developers are known for Guilty Gear and even a few Dragon Ball Z games.
This is a fast-paced fighting game with over twenty characters to choose from. As for the storyline, there are abridged story versions of previous games to help you complete the main storyline plots to get you started. Unfortunately, the latest installment in the BlazBlue franchise, BlazBlue: Central Fiction, has not been released on the Xbox One platform, so if you want to try out this series, you might not be playing Chrono Phantasma Extend.
# 7 Tekken 7
Tekken debuted in 1994 and currently the latest main installment is 7's Tekken 2022 which is available on the Xbox One platform. The game picks up the events of Tekken 6 where we get the showdown under Heihachi Mishima with his son Kazuya. If you're familiar with the previous games, you'll know it's an arcade-like gaming experience with lots of cinematic moves, combos, and even incredibly fast matches if you get killed with the various mechanics.
Meanwhile, this game as mentioned is building off of the previous installment, so it's a big bonus if you're already in the Tekken lore, otherwise some things may pass you by here. Overall, it's a solid 3D arcade fighting title that should grab your attention.
#6 Streets of Rage 4
Streets of Rage was an iconic beat 'em up game franchise for the Sega Genesis, with players receiving three installments before the franchise went dormant. However, years later, we finally got a fourth game in the series which took place a few years after the events of the original trilogy. While Mr. X is no longer around to be a threat, his children have regained control of the town. Now the old team, along with some new faces, are back on their way to rid the city of its corruption.
It's like previous games where players battle against swarms of thugs and battle bosses throughout the multitude of side-scrolling levels. Although your fists do most of the work here, the game provides a few different weapons that you can find and use in your various fights. These include everything from broken pipes, bottles to knives. We even have a new DLC expansion in the works for this game which will add even more beat 'em up content.
# 5 UFC 4
MMA has taken over the sports fighting genre. We don't see boxing games anymore and in its place is the UFC, one of the biggest MMA promotions. There are many iconic legendary fighters that the world has taken notice of with the UFC and of course we have games based on these athletes. The latest entry to UFC video games is UFC 4 where players can take on different fighters or take on the role of one of their favorite athletes from the wrestling promotion league.
Being MMA-based, the game is more focused on boxing, grappling, wrestling, and core work. You'll need to know how to successfully knock an opponent to the ground and give them a fury of punches or chokes until they tap out, a referee calls the fight, or the judges call out their scores. . There's also a career mode here where you're a newcomer to the UFC trying to make your name the greatest of all time.
Soul Calibur VI
Soulcalibur VI is currently the latest installment in the long-running fighting game franchise that focuses on melee combat with weapons. This is another 3D fighter that looks a bit like an arcade fighting title and you'll likely find some notable characters making a return to the slice even for crossover characters. That said, this game is branded as a mild reboot of the video game franchise, which makes it a bit more accessible to newcomers to the franchise. The developers have also made the game quite easy to use in terms of control and there is a character creation option so you can start creating unique characters to fight with.
# 3 Dragon Ball FighterZ
Each console generation usually sees a few great fighting games based on Dragon Ball Z released. For the Xbox One, there are more than a few Dragon Ball Z titles available but if we had to pick just one to recommend, I would would give Dragon Ball FighterZ. This game comes from Arc System Works which as mentioned earlier is known for other iconic video game series like BlazBlue, Guilty Gear, as well as some fighting games like Dragon Ball FighterZ.
This is a fast and smooth 3v3 fighting game that does a great job of keeping the combat mechanics simple. There is no need to mindlessly button mash in the hope of getting a win in this game as the title features an easy to use combat system that allows players to pull off amazing combos and attack scenes. cutscenes. As a Dragon Ball Z title, the narrative here is unique, players must figure out where multiple clone fighters came from and fight against them to end their attempt to take over.
# 2 Mortal Kombat 11 Latest
Mortal Kombat is one of the OG fighting games we all know. It has existed since the days of arcades and quickly invaded homes. This brutal title with blood-filled deaths was even the subject of quite a bit of controversy at the time. Now, years later, those games have gotten even more brutal and creative in their death scenes. There's a stacked roster of memorable characters and quite a bit of content to wade through, whether it's the storyline or the various tournaments that come with tweaked matches to put you at a disadvantage.
Speaking of storyline, this time around we get a timeline-based campaign with characters from the past meeting their current selves. It picks up after the events of Mortal Kombat X, so having some knowledge of the game will help. When it comes to gameplay, the developers took a step back and slowed things down a bit. Rather than fast-paced button-based combat as you try to classify certain combo moves, this game puts players into more strategic gameplay, so knowing the different moves and how to counter them is essential.
Injustice Series #1
Finally, we wanted to highlight the Injustice franchise. It is a game developed by NetherRealm Studios which was responsible for the latest Mortal Kombat titles such as Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate. There are two games here based on DC Comics and a more brutal storyline. Here, Superman began a tyrannical regime after the Joker tricked him into killing his partner, Lois Lane, but I won't spoil anything else here. Both games are incredibly fun and worth playing as we get Mortal Kombat-style combat, but revamped for the various DC Comics characters.
While you don't get the gory deaths of Mortal Kombat here, there are still plenty of cinematic attacks, interactive levels to fight with, and even some unique opening lines between certain characters before their battles. Again, we only have two installments and luckily both are accessible for the Xbox One. While Injustice 2 was released for the Xbox One, the first Injustice: Gods Among Us game can be played through backwards compatibility.
